Jazztimes video interview with Avishai Cohen:

During the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival, JazzTimes set up a make-shift video production studio backstage inside the old barracks of Fort Adams. During two afternoons, a succession of artists—including Hiromi, Esperanza Spalding, Ambrose Akinmusire, Anat Cohen, Steve Coleman, Mostly Other People Do the Killing, Miguel Zenon and many others—came in to talk about the festival, jazz education and their own projects. Introducing Triveni and Israeli Song out on Anzic Records

We are pleased to announce the release of two new recordings on Anzic Records, Avishai Cohen’s introducing Triveni and Eli Degibri’s Israeli Song.

Israeli Song showcases Degibri and an all-star lineup consisting of pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Al Foster. Recorded at Sear Sound Studios in New York by James Farber (live direct to two track), and produced by Degibri, the 11-track set features the quartet on several Degibri originals, as well as compositions by Mehldau, Foster and Carter and the classics “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and Dizzy Gillespie’s “Bebop.” Cohen’s introducing Triveni, features longtime collaborators Omer Avital on bass and Nasheet Waits on drums. Drawing from hard-bop, funk, and avant-garde, introducing Triveni takes on music from the Great American songbook to Cohen’s original compositions, and his provocative and always soulful playing has never sounded so assured.

Anat Cohen garners 4th consecutive Clarinetist of the Year Award

Anat Cohen has won her 4th consecutive “Clarinetist of the Year” award from the Jazz Journalists Association! This is the first time an artist has won the clarinetist award 4 years in a row. As she so aptly demonstrates on this year’s Clarinetwork Live at the Village Vanguard, Anat is building upon the clarinets storied role in jazz music while helping to define the jazz clarinet of the 21st century. Congratulations Anat!

Tonight through December 6th Anat Cohen continues her series at the Village Vanguard by celebrating the music of Sidney Bechet. Like her highly acclaimed tribute to Benny Goodman this summer (to be released in early 2010 on Anzic) Cohen continues to mix tradition with innovation, paying tribute to the legacy of Bechet while using his music as a framework for her explorations of the swing idiom. Tonight Anat Cohen kicks off a very special week at the Village Vanguard where she will debut her tribute to Benny Goodman. Backed by Benny Green on piano, Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, Anat celebrates Goodman’s centennial with a diverse program exploring his work and legacy.

On June 16th, two days after her appearances at the Playboy Jazz Festival, Anat Cohen won her 3rd consecutive “Clarinetist of the Year” award from the Jazz Journalists Association. This is the first time an artist has won the clarinetist award 3 years in a row. On that same day Anat was also honored by ASCAP with the Jazz Wall of Fame Prize for Musicianship and Composition. Anat’s whirlwind start to the summer continues with a run of shows at the Village Vanguard. A week of shows with the 3 Cohens is followed by a tribute to Benny Goodman, “Clarinetwork: Benny Goodman and Beyond”. After the Vanguard, Anat brings her quartet to Canada where she plays the Montreal Jazz Festival.

Anat Cohen will receive the first-ever ASCAP Jazz Wall of Fame Prize. The award is presented to her for her promise in Jazz composition and musicianship. The invitation-only event will be hosted by Mr. Williams in The Allen Room, Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Center in Manhattan beginning at 6:30 PM.

Notes From The Village, Anat Cohen’s latest album will be release on Tuesday, September 9th. Recorded this spring at Avatar studios in NYC, the album captures the thrilling energy of Anat’s live shows, and proves her to be an artistically adventurous writer and performer.
Cohen leads her quartet of some of the most sought-after, engaging young performers in New York, including pianist Jason Lindner, bassist Omer Avital, and drummer Daniel Freedman, with accompaniment from guitarist Gilad Hekselman on three tracks.
